News From The Front – October 1997

Dear praying friends,

The death of Diana, Princess of Wales (followed shortly after the death of ‘Mother’ Tereas) evoked a universal outpouring of grief and without doubt her death and also the loss of those who died with her was an occasion for true and genuine sadness. In the days leading up to her funeral and even for a time afterwards the ‘spiritual vacuum’ of masses of people was clearly evident but I think an even greater tradegy was the failure of so-called Christian leaders to make plain the teaching of God’s word in several crucial areas. Christ claimed to be the sole and unique way to God (John 14:6) and yet an evident ‘all roads lead to God’ attitude was clearly adopted on many occasions. Paul declares that salvation is “not of works” (Ephesians 2:9) but for many there was a tacit acceptance of charitable works as the basis of acceptance by God. The God of heaven declares “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord” (Revelation 14:13) yet millions were assured that souls who had died without the Christ of Calvary were ‘at rest.’ As believers we and others must afresh take to heart the words of the Lord in Matthew 24:4 “Take heed that no man deceive you.” Thank you for your support as Margaret and I urge people where possible to “Take Heed.”

Your servant for Christ

  • Baptism : Mormon & Roman Catholic : Whats The Difference?

In this liberal/ecumenical age one of the things that puzzles me is the apparent blindness of liberals and ecumenists and sadly even some ‘watchmen’ to the true nature of Roman Catholicism. The people I’m referring to will readily concede that Mormonism is a unbiblical cult but they adamantly refuse to concede that likewise Roman Catholicism is an unbiblical cult and yet the similarities between the two systems are remarkable. For the purpose of this short article I want to compare the teachings of Mormonism and Roman Catholicism in relation to Baptism. A Mormon publication which I have in my possession is called ‘Gospel Principles.’ This is a manual designed to help Mormons broden their knowledge of their faith or as we read on page 1 of the introduction ‘The manual has been prepared to be used in a variety of ways. You may want to use it for any of the following reasons.

  • 1. To build your own knowledge and testimony of the gospel.
  • 2. To prepare lessons for family home meetings.
  • 3. To prepare lessons for Church meetings.
  • 4. To prepare talks.
  • 5. To answer questions about the gospel.
  • 6. To help study these scriptures which deal with a certain topic.

Pages 124-130 cover BAPTISM and on page 124 we read

‘Why we must be Baptized?

  • We must be baptized for the remission of our sins
  • If we repent and are baptized our sins are forgiven through the atonement of Jesus Christ.

Then on page 127 we read

  • We must be baptized to become members of the Church of Jesus Christ
  • “All those who humble themselves before God and desire to be baptized…that…have truly repented of all their sins…shall be received by baptism into his church” (D&C 20:37)

Finally on page 130 we read

  • Baptism gives us a New Beginning
  • With baptism we begin a new way of life. That is why we call it a rebirth Jesus said that unless a man is born again he cannot enter the kingdom of God. He further explained that except a man is born of water and of the spirit he cannot enter the kingdom of God (see John 3:3-5)

So to sum up Mormonism teaches that 3 of the results of being baptised are as follows:-

  • 1. Our sins are forgiven.
  • 2.We are received into Christ’s church.
  • 3. We are born again.

Moving now to Roman Catholicism I want to quote what the official teachings on the subject of BAPTISM are and for this purpose I will be quoting from the documents of Vatican II (Volume 2 By Austin Flannery O.P.) and from the 1994 Catechism of the Catholic Church.

On Page 561 of the Vatican II documents we read

  • ‘Catechesis on the sacraments

57. By baptism men and women are cleansed from original sin and from all personal sins, they are born again as children of God, are made part of the Church…”

This statement from Vatican II states clearly that by means of Baptism

  • 1. Sins are forgiven.
  • 2. People are received into the Church.
  • 3. People are born again

What then does the 1994 Roman Catholic Catechism have to say on the subject? In Paragraph 1263 (page 286) we read ‘By baptism all sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sins as well as punishment for sin.’

In Paragraph 1267 (page 287) we read

‘Baptism makes us members of the Body of Christ: “Therefore…we are members one of another.” Baptism incorporates us into the Church.’

In Paragraph 1213 (pages 276-277) we read

‘Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life…Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God…Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word’

These teachings are summarised in paragraph 1279 (page 289) ‘The fruit of Baptism or baptismal grace is a rich reality that includes forgiveness of original sin and all personal sins, birth into the new life by which man becomes an adoptive son of the Father, a member of Christ and a temple of the Holy Spirit. By this very fact the person baptized is incorporated into the Church, the body of Christ and made a sharer in the priesthood of Christ.’

The 1994 Roman Catholic catechism clearly teaches that through baptism

  • 1. Sins are forgiven
  • 2. People are received into the church
  • 3. People are born again

and this is what Vatican II taught AND IT IS ALSO WHAT MORMONISM TAUGHT. True believers know that sins are not forgiven, people are not received into the body of Christ (HIS church) and people are not born again through the sacrament of baptism – these teachings constitute a ‘false gospel.’ How should we relate to those systems which promote such false teachings? Unfortunately the ‘Evangelical’ signatories to the ‘Evangelicals and Catholics

Together’ document (people like Charles Colson, Bill Bright and J. I.Packer) and the influential Robert Schuller (host of ‘The Hour of Power’ which goes out worldwide via satellite TV) who has featured Mormons on his programme seem to have little problem giving their seal of approval to these truth-dishonouring systems. Let us stand with Paul who under inspiration wrote “If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received let him be accursed” (Galatians 1v9).

  • ‘Counterfeit Revival by Hank Hanegraaff

Since January 1994 professing Christendom has been awash with claims of mighty revivals – first there was the so called ‘Toronto Blessing’ and this in turn has been followed by what might be termed ‘The Pensacola Revival.’ During my research into the goings-on at Toronto it was clear that leaders in what is known as the Word of Faith Movement (also known as ‘Health and Wealth Gospel’ or ‘Name it and Claim it’ ) had heavily influenced those who were the instigators of events at Toronto. Many of these leaders were named and their false and heretical teachings documented in an excellent book by Hank Hanegraaff called ‘Christianity In Crisis.’ In the last couple of years Hank has attended meetings held by some of the key figures involved either in Toronto or Pensacola and once again he has published a very timely reference book called “COUNTERFEIT REVIVAL.” The material presented in this book should remove any doubts about whether GOD is visibly moving in these claimed ‘revivals’ – it is clear that HE is not and sadly thousands of people are being duped and deceived by those making the extravagant and erroneous claims of an outpouring of the Spirit of God. Needless to say Hank’s book has not been welcomed in circles which have fully embraced and accepted ‘holy laughter’ ‘animal noises’ and all the other distressing and disgusting ‘manifestations.’ CHARISMA magazine which gives full backing and exposure to all the main characters on the ‘charismatic circus’ scene (as distinct from classic conservative Pentecostals) in its July 1997 issue contains an appraisal by Jon Ruthven Ph.D of “COUNTERFEIT REVIVAL.” Mr Ruthven’s headline comments state ‘In his new book “COUNTERFEIT REVIVAL” Hank Hanegraaff dismisses current revival movements as nothing more than charismatic chaos’ and later he writes ‘With one broad brush Hanegraaff has painted warning signs on some of the most significant moments in church history. By doing so he is as in my opinion unjustly discredited the work of God.’ Needless to say I would totally disagree with Mr Ruthven’s view that Toronto and Pensacola represent the ‘work of God’ and our brother Hank is to be commended for exposing works which evidence “the world, the flesh and the devil.” “COUNTERFEIT REVIVAL” has been published in hardback form and is retailing in shops @ £12.99. It can be purchased from myself (cheques payable to ‘Take Heed’ Publications) for £12.00 which includes postage and packing.

I mentioned in my opening article that some ‘watchmen’ fail to acknowledge the evident cultic nature of Roman Catholicism and this is the one regret I have about the ministry of Hank Hanegraaff who is President of Christian Research Institute which was founded by the late Walter Martin. On several occasions as I was reading through ‘Counterfeit Revival’ I thought ‘Hank, why don’t you apply that reasoning when it comes to Roman Catholicism.’ On page 110 Hank writes “While there are unquestionably Quakers who are evangelicals, Quakerism itself has historically compromised the EVANGELICAL ESSENTIAL [emphasis mine] of Sola Scriptura.” If Hank recognises that Sola Scriptura is an Evangelical Essential then surely he must realise that Tradition places Romanism firmly outside the ‘Evangelical’ camp and in the camp of those proclaiming ‘other evangels’ and we have quoted already Paul’s ‘anathema’ upon such groups. On pages 113-114 we read ‘the Counterfeit Revival effectively reduces Christ to a means to its ends. Devotees are urged to come to the Master’s table, not in devotion to the Master, but rather to devour whats is on the master’s table.’ Does that statement not sum up the essential difference between the Roman Catholic Mass (‘a means to its ends’ ie salvation) and the Believers Communion or Lord’ Supper (a memorial of ‘devotion to the Master.’) Perhaps one day brother Hank will use his God given gift to analyze in a biblical and unfettered manner the system of Roman Catholicism – if he does I have the title for such a book -‘COUNTERFEIT CHRISTIANITY.’

  • ‘Geese in Their Hoods’ [Selected writings on Roman Catholicism]

In this book we have many of the writings of CHARLES HADDEN SPURGEON on the subject of Roman Catholicism and without doubt Tim Kauffman of White Horse Publications has rendered a valuable service to today’s generation by assembling in one volume this much needed commentary on the Roman system by one of the true evangelical ‘giants.’ Mr Spurgeon pulls no punches when bringing the truth of scripture to bear on Rome and its religion. Sample this extract contained in a letter which Mr Spurgeon wrote from Rome to his church and friends in England (page 23) ‘Standing where Satan’s seat is, in the midst of ten thousand idols I beseech those who worship God in the spirit to wrestle in prayer for times of refreshing that all lands may know, that Jesus Christ is Lord. How long shall the Name of Jesus be blasphemed by the idolatries of Antichrist?’ Tim Kauffman writes in his introduction (page 20-21) There are of course some who will say that Spurgeon lived in a different time, a time when anti-Romanism was fashionable and that with all of todays social concerns, even Spurgeon might be driven to reconsider his position But Spurgeon knew that there was ONLY ONE true social issue of which all the rest were merely a subset: the depravity of man. The question which Spurgeon knew to ask – and we wish that Christians today would ask it was “What is the solution to man’s total depravity?” The answer of course is the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Spurgeon knew well enough that Rome did not have it. If Rome could not save the souls of men she could not save humanity from the effects of its own depraved nature…Rome is worse now than when Spurgeon was alive. He said rather plainly at the time “the master-piece of Satan is popery”…he knew Rome was a system a FORMAL OFFICIAL denial of the gospel of Jesus Christ…The gospel cannot be joined to the anti-gospel. The good news cannot be reduced to just plain news. And Christ has no part with Belial…to join with Rome is to forfeit Christ’s Gospel. Tim Kauffman by the way is a former Roman Catholic! In this age of ecumenical drift where even history at times is re-written to endow people and events with a false ecumenical bias (as we shall see shortly) this book is an absolute must for those opposing the rising tide of ecumenical apostasy.“GEESE IN THEIR HOODS” (204 pages) can be purchased from myself (cheques payable to ‘Take Heed’ Publications) for 7.00 which includes postage.

  • Re-Writing History

I mentioned how people and events from a former age can be ‘doctored’ by the ecumenists to suit their cause. A good example was back in 1987 when Methodists in Northern Ireland who were planning to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the conversion of John Wesley decided to join their celebrations to those of Roman Catholics who were planning to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the death of Alphonsus De Liguori one of the most wicked and blasphemous ‘theologians’ ever to have put pen to paper. This year we have again seen the history-revisionists at work as they seek to peddle the lie that St. Columba of Ireland and Augustine, the Pope’s special envoy sent to the British Isles some 1400 years ago to ‘Christianise’ them were contemporaries united in the work of gospel THIS IS A LIE and a helpful leaflet written by Peter Gadsen setting the historical record straight can be obtained [free] from myself upon request.

  • “Take Heed” Mission Fund

As you will know this special fund was launched earlier this year with the aim of sending the testimony tapes of Richard Bennett and Frank Eberhardt to every Roman Catholic priest in Ireland – estimated to be a total of almost 6000 men. I want to begin by expressing sincere thanks to all who contributed to this fund whether as individuals or as church fellowships. I am also indebted to a number of individuals [they and the Lord know who they are] who have assisted greatly in labeling cassettes, placing inserts into the cassette boxes, printing up address labels and personalising covering letters. To them all I say a big thank you. The financial response was tremendous and a sure sign that God was in this outreach and as I prepare this report [13/9/97] I can advise you that tapes have been sent to over 3300 priests. Just as a sower sows a seed sow will blow back in his face and we have a relatively small number of sets returned – some with less than charitable comments written on the envelope or noted inside. Others have evoked hostile phone calls accusing us of all kinds of narrow-minded bigotry and even ‘doing the devil’s work.’ But we have also had letters and phone calls of an inquiring nature where we have been able to share some scriptures and send further materials. In this respect please remember a priest called Francis (and his mother Christina who is terminally ill). Please pray for Tom (who has left the priesthood and is living with a lady and their child). Especially please pray for Patrick who had been experiencing doubts about ‘the priesthood’ and who was beginning to ‘make sense’ of what Richard and Frank were saying. The Fund remains open and my next newsletter should (DV) give a final summary of tapes sent and reactions to them.

  • Europe Returning to ‘The Dark Ages’
  • Gibraltar Chronicle, Saturday, 10th May, 1997
  • Historic Day For Lady of Europe Shrine

A major historical event takes place in Gibraltar today as we witness the Enthronement of the ancient statue of Our Lady of Europe and the Reconsecration and of the Continent of Europe a monument steeped in history is where it will all happen.

  • Europe United

Embellished throught Government and European Funding the Shrine will hopefully become once again a place worthy of prayer and pilgrimages. In words of Bishop Devlin “The Light has been extinguished for hundreds of years but we are about to rekindle it again. It will not be a light for sailors but a light to guide Europe into the Third Millennium.” The Holy Father himself the Pope John Paul II, in the Council of Europe, called on all European Countries, which once formed the cradle of Christianity, to revive their European Christian Heritage. The page opposite from the Gibraltar Chronicle of 10th May 1997 illustrates graphically the dark, idolatrous depths into which the continent of Europe is rapidly sinking as Romanism advances and seeks to regain the ground lost in the wake of the Reformation of the 16th century. Other reports quoted comments from many leading figures in the Roman Catholic hierarchy and I want to spotlight the remarks of a number of the Irish Roman Catholic Bishops plus several others:-

Archbishop [soon to be Cardinal] Sean Brady of Armagh “The consecration of the Continent of Europe to Our Lady of Europe is very timely and will be welcomed by many people.”

Bishop Patrick Walsh (Down and Connor) “I have wonderfull memories of my visit tot the shrine. Please be assured of my prayers for this truly significant event.”

Cardinal Ricardo Ma Carles (Barcelona) “These are act of great significance for all the countries of Europe.”

Archbishop Michael Bowen (Southwark England) “I send my greetings to everyone in Gibraltar for the celebrations on the 10th May. I am sorry not to be with you especially since I have such close ties with the Rock.”

It’s unfortunate that these men do not have “close ties” with “the rock” of Scripture, Jesus Christ (1 Cor 10v4).

  • Video – “A Woman Rides the Beast”

Several years ago Dave Hunt wrote a book called ‘A Woman Rides the Beast’ in which he courageously detailed the true evolution of the Roman Catholic system, catalogued the evils carried out by it in the name of Christ and identified it as “Mystery Babylon The Great” of Revelation chapter 17. Dave’s ministry has now produced a well-made professional video which takes up some of the important themes of his book and copies are available from myself. The video lasts just under one hour and is retailing in shops for around £15.00. If you wauld like a copy it can he purchased from myself cheques made payable to (“Take Heed” Publications) for £11.00 which ineludes postage & packing.

  • Visit of Dr Eryl Davies

Dr Davies was in the Province from 8th-l3th September and spoke each evening in a different location on the topic of ‘Christ and the Cooneyites.’ This religious group started in the early part of this century in Co.Fermanagh in Northern Ireland – mostly over the year false teachings have been imported into the Province hut this is a set of false teachings which were exported worldwide to America Canada, Australia and New Zealand where the group is known as perhaps ‘Two By Twos’ ar ‘Go Preachers’ or ‘Christian Convention Church.’ The meetings attracted much interest and afforded direct witnessing opportunities. Audio and video tapes of what Dr Davies had to say are available from myself with prices as follaws:- `Video tape £5.00: Audio tape £3.00 Prices include postage and packing

  • Visit of Chris Hand

Enclosed you will find details of meetings involving Chris Hand who now runs a ‘helpline’ for people (who like himself) had a bad experience of ‘Toronto.’ Your prayers and attendance (where posssible) are coveted.

  • Mother Teresa’s ‘Multi-Faith’ Successor

During her life ‘Mother’ Teresa often made it clear that it was not her desire or intention to try and convert people to the Roman Catholic faith. Dave Hunt in his book ‘The Seduction of Christianity’ (p71) quotes her statement “Oh I hope I am converting. I don’t mean what you think…If in coming face to face with God we accept Him in our lives, then we are converting. We become a better Hindu, a better Muslim, a better Catholic, a better whatever we are…What approach would I use? For me naturally if would be a Catholic one for you it may be Hinda, for someone else Buddhist according to one’s conscience. What God is in your mind you MUST accept.” Following a prolonged period of serious illness it was agreed that ‘Mother’ Teresa would stand down as leader of the Missionaries of Charity and on Friday l4th March her successor was elected. The Indian newspaper ‘The Deccan Herald’ carried a report that day and stated ‘Sister Nirmala was today elected to succeed Mother Teresa…A former Hindu, Sister Nirmala (63) was baptised in 1958…A calm and composed Sister Nirmala said “it is a big responsibility. Looking at myself I feel afraid whether I will be able to bear the responsibility but looking at god I think I can.’

Who is this ‘god’ to whom Sister Nirmala is looking? Well later in the article we see clearly that it is not the only true God as revealed by the Bible. The report states ‘Sister Nirmala’s other brother, Surendra, is a college teacher and lives in Kathmandu…Sister Nirmala’s parents, high-caste Hindu Brahmins, did not oppose her joining the Missionaries of Charity..The relatives said that during trips to Kathmandu Sister Nirmala often visited Lord Pashupatinath temple, a sacred Hindu shrine which non-Hindus are not allowed to enter. She would offer prayers from the gate of the temple. “She told us that all gods were equal and worshipped them equally” said Ms Nina Joshi, Sister Nirmala’s niece.`

Sadly Sister Nirmala is as deceived as was her predecessor.

  • The Panacea Society

The following advert in the Daily Mail of 2nd August 1997 caught my eye and I duly sent off for the leaflet offered.

In response I received 4 A5 leaflets and a short note about other books which are available in libraries. Two of the leaflets told the story of Joanna Southcott who lived in England between 1750-1814. One leaflet states. ‘In 1972…she first heard the voice of the Lord, the “still small voice”…For 22 years she received the Divine Messages…The messages were published in 65 books…Before her death the Prophetess was divinely told not to publish certain of her writings but to seal them up and place then in an Ark or Box…it has been handed on from guardian to guardian (he) is under a strict promise to quard it unopened and only to hand it over to be opened by 24 Bishops of the Church of England.’

Another enclosed leaflet refers to Revelation 11v19

“And the temple of God was opened in heaven and there was seen in his temple THE ARK of his testament” and Revelation 4v4 “And round about the throne were four and twenty seats and upon the seats I saw four and twenty Elders (Bishops)” and then proceeds to apply these scriptures as referring to the sealed-up writings of Joanna Southcott and 24 Bishops of the Church of England. Another leaflet informs us that this box ‘would be in a time of great Nationaldanger be opened by 24 Bishops of the Church of England…when they obey our Lord will cause England to be the first happy land. The Bishops have consistently refused even to look into the matter…If these Bishops had been less obdurate the Box could have been opened many years ago and our present troubles need never have taken place.’ Another of the leaflets ends with this request ‘join us in demanding the opening of the Ark.’

The PANACEA (universal remedy) for England’s problems or for anywhere else for that matter will not come when their Bishops open up the sealed writings of Joanna Southcott but rather when once more they open up the inspired Word of God and expound it fearlessly as did for example Bishop J.C.Ryle in the last century. As for England becoming a ‘happy land’ the PANACEA to bring about such a condition is found in Psalm 144 vl5 “Happy is that people whose God is the Lord.”

  • Promise Keepers Formally Link With Rome

Our Sunday Visitor an American Roman Catholic newspaper reported the following in its July 20th 1997 issue ‘At its March meeting Promise Keepers board of directors welcomed Mike Timmis as a new member. A Detroit-area lawyer and businessman Timmis is a Longtime Leader in the Catholic Charismatic renewal. At several rallies this year P.K’s has spotlighted Catholic Evangelist Jim Berlocchi as a speaker…and earlier this year P.K’s amended its statement of faith revising the lines that Catholics had found offensive. P.Ks founder Bill McCartney told our Sunday Visitor that full Catholic participation was his intention from the start….Last year P.K’s published a “Statement of Faith” with lines that seamed to be crafted to exclude Catholics. Section Five of the P.K’s credo read “We believe that man was created in the image of God but because of sin was alienated from God. That alienation can be removed only by accepting through FAITH ALONE God’s gift of salvation which was made possible by Christ’s death.” Faith alone” is a key doctrine of the Protestant Reformation…Early this year P.K’s revised the statement in a way that passed theological muster with those Catholics “Only through faith, trusting in Christ alone for salvation, which was made possible by his death and resurrection, can that alienation be renewed.” This amended wording obviously falls into line with the false Roman Catholic gospel of faith + works = salvation.

The report also tells of 2 P.K. officials visiting the Catholic Steubenville University in 1995 – chairman Dale Schlafer and vice-president Glenn Wagner. John Sengenberger the Catholic who hosted their visit stated ‘we invited them to go through our bookstore and take any books they wanted…Dale took a set of the Liturgy of the Hours. The following year he rated me he’d incorporated it into his daily prayer so Glenn asked for one too.’ Sengenberger reported reaction during a Eucharistic Holy Hour in 1996 ‘I remember going down on my knees, then prostrate, down on my face and right next to me was Glenn Wagner doing the same thing.’

“What concord hath Christ with Belial?” (2nd Cor.6:15)
