The murderous events that took place at Fort Hood on Thursday 5th November 2009 were truly shocking but what have been equally as shocking have been the concerted attempts by both the media and politicians to rule out the possibility that the actions of Major Nidal Malik Hasan were directly linked to his being a Muslim.
This attempted ‘removal of any blame from Islam’ has been taking place on both sides of the Atlantic. The BBC Newsnight programme of Friday 6th November was a prime example of this and it prompted me to send a complaint to the BBC. Currently this programme can be viwed on http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00ntf7m/N… and if you scroll forward to about 21-22minutes into the programme you will see their coverage of the Fort Hood massacre
Prominently and in the public eye we today have a President, a former Prime Minister and a purpose-driven Pastor all claiming allegiance to Jesus Christ. In this newsletter and enclosure you will read much about them and their common ‘vision’ for the future. Are they speaking and behaving, as true men of God ought to? It’s enlightening to note what C H Spurgeon wrote about Psalm 26:4-5 and its author, David – “So far from being himself an open offender against the laws of God, the Psalmist had not even associated with the lovers of evil. He had kept aloof from the men of Belial. A man is known by his company, and if we have kept ourselves apart from the wicked, it will always be evidence in our favour should our character be impugned… True citizens (of heaven) have no dealings with traitors. David had no seat in the parliament of triflers… We must needs see, and speak, and trade with men of the world, but we must on no account take our rest and solace in their empty society… as this vanity is often allied with falsehood… The congregation of the hypocrites is not one with which we should cultivate communion; their ultimate rendezvous will be the lowest pit of hell”. Social and political goals should never cause us to trifle with or compromise the uniqueness of the Person and work of the only Saviour of men, the Lord Jesus Christ – to do so is a mark of ‘sitting with vain persons’ (v 4) and ‘sitting with the wicked’ (v 5) – such intentions do not reveal men after God’s heart. May we all, like David “walk in His truth” (v 3).
Since his inauguration as President of the United States of America, Barack Obama has made serious efforts to ingratiate himself even further with groups that would be very antagonistic towards Christian attitudes that are based on the teachings of Holy Scripture. Two such groups would be the‘pro-abortion’ lobby and the ‘gay marriage’ lobby.
On Radio Ulster’s ‘Sunday Sequence’ programme on Sunday morning, 7th June 2009, there was an item analysing the speech delivered by President Barack Obama at Cairo University on the previous Thursday, 4th June 2009. What was interesting was that the guests who were interviewed by presenter, William Crawley basically represented Jewish and Palestinian opinion – there was no Christian analytical input into the programme. As a result the programme focussed very much on the possible political ramifications of the speech for the Middle East area and Israel in particular. I want in this article to look at some of the spiritual ramifications of this speech, particularly as they impact upon the line in the speech when Barack Obama declared, “I am a Christian”. To do this I’m going to pose some questions, then look at some specific extracts of this speech by Mr Obama, this self-proclaimed “Christian”, comment upon these extracts and show how such comments do represent a betrayal of the Lord Jesus Christ.
I mentioned in my last newsletter how the BBC was ‘singing the praises’ of Charles Darwin and his [still] theory of Evolution. I happened to catch coverage of a March debate in the House of Lords the aim of which was also to extol the praises and merits of Darwin and Evolution. One Lord Harries of Pentregarth, the former Anglican Bishop of Oxford, took the opportunity to magnify the supposed scientific basis of Evolution in contrast to those misguided Christians who still believe in Creation as outlined in God’s Word. Back in my June 2002 newsletter I quoted the following about this then Bishop – Dr Richard Harries, the Bishop of Oxford said on Radio 4’s Thought for the Day ‘It is therefore quite extraordinary that 140 years later, after so much evidence has accumulated, a school in Gateshead is opposing evolutionary theory on alleged biblical grounds. Do some people really think that the worldwide scientific community is engaged in a massive conspiracy to hoodwink the rest of us’? The reality is that he is being used by a certain malevolent source to hoodwink people. Paul refers to him and his ilk in 2nd Corinthians 11:13-14 “such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light”. Evolution has also been a ‘godsend’ to outright atheists – see page 3. Meantime let us all, as we are given opportunity, take our stand for our Creator God.
Some years ago a local politician who was closely identified with one of the leading terrorist groups involved in what came to be known here as ‘the troubles’ famously said in a speech during a period of ceasefire – ‘they haven’t gone away you know’. He was stating plainly that although the terrorists were at that stage ‘lying low’ they had the capability to at any time restart their murderous campaign. In many ways Satan’s deceptions are like that – they rage and war against God’s truth for a period of time and then they appear to have ‘blown themselves out’ but the reality is very different, they are really just biding their time to perhaps re-invent themselves and then re-emerge with renewed devastating deceptive force. In the 1990’s 2 diabolical deceptions were the Canadian so-called ‘Toronto Blessing’ that was followed by the Florida based so-called ‘Pensacola Revival’. Attempts are being made to revive interest in them and present them as ‘moves of the Holy Spirit – a good example being the ‘Toronto’ articles in the April 2008 ‘Directions’ magazine of the Elim grouping (the front cover spread of this was also given over to the social/ecumenical HOPE ’08 initiative). Locally, one sister in Christ, after having sought information resigned from her church as it was attempting to rekindle Toronto-like activity. Again in Florida, this time in Lakeland, great claims are being made for manifestations at meetings hosted by Todd Bentley – this has all the makings of a rerun of the Pensacola deception. It was indicated to me that Todd Bentley may be lining up a visit to the UK – all I can say in relation to this and any attempt to revive ‘Toronto’ is “Take Heed”.
Islam claims to respect Jesus Christ as a true prophet of God. In the Koran in Sura 2:136 we read “Say: We believe in Allah and (in) that which had been revealed to us, and (in) that which was revealed to Ibrahim [Abraham] and Ismail [Ishmael] and Ishaq [Isaac]and Yaqoub [Jacob] and the tribes, and(in) that which was given to Musa [Moses] and Isa [Jesus], and (in) that which was given to the prophets from their Lord, we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit”.
By your pronouncements on Shari’a law you have added to the growing list of anti-Christian views that you have espoused in public and you have proved once more that you are “not fit for purpose”. The mark of one who truly knows and loves the only true God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit is obedience to His law [John 14:15]. God has summarised His law very neatly in 10 Commandments [Exodus 20:3-17]. How does Islam ‘stack up’ against these?
According to a report in the Daily Mail of Friday 18 January 2008, British government ministers ‘have adopted a new language for declarations on Islamic terrorism. In future fanatics will be referred to as “pursuing anti-Islamic activity”. Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith said that extremists were behaving contrary to their faith, rather than acting in the name of Islam…In one passage she said “As so many Muslims in the UK and across the world have pointed out, there is nothing Islamic about plotting murder, pain and grief. Indeed if anything these things are anti-Islamic…In her speech Miss Smith said extremists who use the internet to radicalise young children would be pursued in the same way as paedophiles [let’s hope they’re more alert than the South Yorkshire police for it was reported on Wednesday of this week – ‘A paedophile named on a list of the UK’s “most wanted” was arrested but later released after police failed to recognise him. South Yorkshire Police officers only realised who Joshua Karney was after he was fined for being drunk and released. Karney, 30, is one of five of the UK’s most wanted sex offenders after going missing from Lancashire in 2005’]…Mosques will be helped to root out extremism with Imams encouraged to learn English’.
